Delta Turning the Runway Pink

Delta to Turn JFK Tower Pink, Host In-Flight Jam Session

Airline launches fifth year of support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Hard Rock International PINKTOBER(TM) Ambassador Melissa Etheridge

Download image ATLANTA, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) will kick off its fifth year of support for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) Sept. 29 by lighting the New York-JFK air traffic control tower in pink and honoring breast cancer survivors with a live in-flight performance by Hard Rock International PINKTOBER(TM) Ambassador Melissa Etheridge.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090202/DELTALOGO )

Delta will be joined by Etheridge, BCRF, and representatives from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at 5 p.m. EDT, Sept. 29 to light the exterior of the New York-JFK air traffic control tower in pink. Immediately following the lighting ceremony, Delta will host a charter flight for employee breast cancer survivors aboard its signature "pink plane" from JFK to Washington D.C.-Reagan National Airport. While in flight, Etheridge will perform a special acoustic rendition of her hit single "I Run for Life."

"It is inspiring to our employees and customers to become increasingly involved in raising awareness and funds for this important cause," said Joanne Smith, senior vice president of In-Flight Service. "Launching this year's breast cancer awareness campaign in New York continues our growing support and presence in the city. After 'painting' JFK's control tower pink, having Melissa perform in-flight will be an emotional, heartwarming experience."

Delta's "pink" flight between New York and Washington is the first in a series of activities planned throughout October to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thousands of Delta flight attendants will don pink t-shirts and pink versions of the airline's red dress to offer pink lemonade to customers for $2 on flights worldwide, with net proceeds benefiting BCRF. Co-branded Delta and BCRF pink products, including pink luggage tags, tumblers, aprons and pens, also will be available beginning Sept. 15 at http://www.deltashop.com for $2-$16 to benefit BCRF.

Delta's distinctive pink-and-white Boeing 757 aircraft, the "pink plane," featuring BCRF's trademarked pink ribbon logo on the tail of the aircraft and adjacent to the boarding door, first took flight in 2005. Since then, it has flown throughout the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean to generate awareness for the cause. In that time, Delta has raised nearly $1.5 million for BCRF through donations from customers, employees and The Delta Foundation, the airline's charitable organization. The donations have funded the work of five researchers dedicated to the mission of achieving prevention and finding a cure for breast cancer.

Delta Air Lines' Sky Magazine Joins Hard Rock International, American Guitar & Band and Designer Carlos Falchi to Create an Exclusive, One-Of-A-Kind Guitar Strap to Benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation(R)

Melissa Etheridge wears the specially-designed guitar strap on Sky's October cover

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Sky magazine, the travel, business and lifestyle publication of Delta Air Lines, has partnered with Hard Rock International, American Guitar & Band and renowned accessories designer Carlos Falchi to create an exclusive, one-of-a-kind guitar strap to be auctioned off for breast cancer research and awareness. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090929/CG83202) Carlos Falchi custom made the Swarovski crystal-encrusted, pink snakeskin strap for Grammy(R) winner, breast cancer survivor and Hard Rock PINKTOBER(TM) Ambassador Melissa Etheridge and the October cover of Sky magazine. The online auction, benefitting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, can be found at http://www.deltaskymag.com/bidforacause from September 29 through October 31. The strap has been autographed by both Etheridge and Falchi and is valued in excess of $2,000.

"We saw the October issue of Sky as a great opportunity to directly connect to a topic that Delta is involved with in the community, and to put our own spin on it," said Jayne Haugen Olson, editor in chief of Sky. "Hard Rock International and Delta created a unique concert in the sky aboard its pink plane with Melissa Etheridge and it became a natural connection for Sky to feature Miss Etheridge on our cover."

"As we worked with Ms. Etheridge's team, the idea of a pink guitar strap seemed all too appropriate," Olson continues, "We reached out to American Guitar & Band owners Cory and Stephanie Lake, who have an exclusive partnership with famed fashion accessories designer Carlos Falchi on a distinctive line of couture-quality guitar straps. They enlisted Falchi to create the one-of-a-kind strap for Etheridge and the end result, 'La Vie en Rose,' speaks for itself. We hope it sparks an interest and raises significant dollars for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation."

Sky's cover story, "Seeing Pink," focuses on the growth of cause marketing as it relates to breast cancer awareness and research and features an interview with Etheridge who tells readers about her fight to beat cancer and her ongoing pursuit to find a cure for the disease.

Great job putting pages up Nano! As noted on one page, the air traffic control tower was lit up pink and ABC's Robin Robert's helped flip the switch. Wondering if some footage may show up on GMA this morning? Everyone set your DVR's! 8-)

Melissa Etheridge rocks out in midair for a good cause

The event: Don't blame Melissa Etheridge for feeling a little rosy these days. The rocker boarded a customized pink Delta jet Tuesday evening with a plane full of cancer survivors to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. It's part of Hard Rock's PINKTOBER initiative and a cause that's dear to Etheridge.

Why she cares: Etheridge, 48, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2004. She had chemotherapy and is now cancer-free. "Raising awareness and raising funds for research: Those are two things that matter to me," the singer says.

Get on board: Etheridge, along with Delta execs and Evelyn Lauder, founder of the foundation, boarded the tricked-out Boeing 757 after a news conference at Kennedy Airport.

The mood: Giddy. The passengers, most of them flight attendants who are also breast cancer survivors, clapped when the jet took off. They milled around, taking pictures. Etheridge sat in the front row, in first class, but remained approachable, chatting with anyone who walked up to her.

In-flight entertainment: Etheridge strapped on a guitar and chatted up the audience before performing. "No stage rushing," she joked. "We've come a long way in five years. This is pretty fun. ... I think I've joined some kind of mile-high club?" She added, "You guys have made this journey a pretty amazing one so far."

Come to her window: Etheridge performed a version of her hit I Run for Life. She calls it a "song of hope."

The family:
The singer lives in Los Angeles with her wife, Tammy Lynn Michaels, and their twins Miller Steven and Johnnie Rose, almost 3 (Etheridge also has daughter Bailey, 12, and son Beckett, 10, from a previous relationship). The kids didn't come along for the ride. "This stuff is just too crazy," Etheridge says. "It's best to do alone and tell them all about it. And the two older ones are in school."

Lessons learned: At home, Etheridge is the chef, and Michaels is the baker who whips up cinnamon rolls. Still, the singer is vigilant about being healthy. "Going through breast cancer taught me about that," she says. "I'm more in touch with health and balance and stress and the food I put in my body."

Next project: Her new album, Fearless Love, arrives in March. "It really rocks," she says.

What a truly FANTASTIC experience. :) To be honest, I was expecting the flight to be just like a normal flight but with a nice little Melissa serenade, but Delta really went above and beyond. The entire flight was like a big party. They had pre-selected the seating for everyone so that all attendees were mixed up with each other: Delta staff who were all breast cancer survivors, us, and Hard Rock staff. What they did was well crafted because we all sat with others from other groups and each group got to learn what the other was there for. It was a very moving experience for everyone. I personally sat with two Hard Rock publicists and a Delta survivor sat across from me and we all had some really great chats. Delta had a goodie bag on each seat and the staff on the flight were all the senior staff from Delta and they were great fun and really added to the experience. The energy inside the plane was like nothing else, it was truly a magnificent experience and is really hard to put into words.

Melissa performed and the plane was actually wired throughout with speakers, they really went above and beyond to make this a fantastic experience for everyone. Here are a few pictures I took, some before we boarded the flight on the carpet, one on the plane, and the first one is not mine, I'm not sure who took it but it was on SpeakTrue Twitter, it's a really adorable photo of "Captain Etheridge" who welcomed us to the plane with an introduction on the overhead speakers of something like, "Welcome to Delta ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain, Melissa Etheridge speaking."

And again, Melissa looked absolutely fabulous. Enjoy!

PS You may want to watch Access Hollywood Thursday night for some in-flight footage. :D

DRG and Giant and all those who took part in that two day experience - I am so happy for you all that it was as incredible as it sounds. Please post more pictures and videos as fast as you can. Hard rock was amazing, and I was so glad I made it there for that. Melissa did look beautiful, vibrant and so very happy.

I don't mind saying that we're gonna miss going to see Melissa until she tours again. we'll miss seeign all of you as well. Safe home everyone!

On a serious Pinktober note, please (my GF included)-- all of you who are 40 or over, have a family history of breast cancer, or have a personal history of biopsies/lumps/other breast abnormalities...PLEASE let the month of October be your reminder to schedule your annual or biannual mammogram!!! :rose:

Sounds like an amzing time was had by all! Does anyone have a copy of the Sirius broadcast? I signed up fo a trial but I was too late for the interview/performance. Also how long and how many songs did Melissa play at the events? And the new songs are sounding so good! I can't wait for the new album!
